A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national projects.
