RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
