Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a major honors show draws close, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
